Window cleaners suffer electric shock

The services of window cleaners are in high demand among firms in the UK and many other countries. After all, it can be time consuming and difficult to ensure that glazed areas remain free of dirt but achieving this is crucial if businesses are to retain a high-class image. This is why many organisations rely on commercial window cleaners to get the job done for them.

However, even the experts can get into difficulties sometimes, as was proved by a recent accident in the US.

Nicholas Genovese and Alan Weinberg were performing their role as window cleaners at the Bank of America on Merrick Road in Lynbrook, Long Island when a gust of wind blew the pole they were holding. The rod, which was around 40 feet long, was thrust into overhead power cables, causing them to sustain a serious electric shock.

Both individuals, who are aged 58 and 64 respectively, were knocked to the ground and sustained serious injuries as a result of the 33,000 volt shock.

Mr Weinberg experienced a cardiac arrest and paramedics had to perform CPR on him to restart his heartbeat.

The pair were transported to Nassau University Medical Centre, where they received treatment for the damage they suffered.

Commenting on the fact he is still alive, Mr Genovese noted he feels very lucky. He remarked: "I am not the best Catholic. But I am going to start going to church again this Sunday," NBC New York reports.

Speaking from his hospital bed, he added: "I blacked out for a second. Then I felt the electricity run through my body."

Meanwhile, he promised he would be rejoining his fellow commercial window cleaners as soon as he is healed, but noted that he will forever count his blessings. He concluded by stating: "You never expect something like this to happen to you."
